Since no one reads this blog anymore anyway, I get to post anything I want! I don't know if I would normaly post a link to SemGirl's blog, but she coined a great term that will go mainstream in no time: indoctrination center.

The B List
So who made it onto the B list? Who on the B list is a true believer and who is a true shaigetz?
Cookie is the top of the list. No controversy, just some torah-true inspiration. We need more of those blogs.
Aidel Maidel is what you read for some more serious inspiration. If only I could find the time to read her questions and answers.
The Rebbele is the real true believer. He actually thinks he can change people! Maybe he could, and if he can't, let him at least be a counter-balance.
She's blog is where you go for some cool writing. It doesn't come often, but when it does, it puts into one line what I put into 25.
Mrs. Mosquito is one of the old-style blogs. A pleasure to read for a glimpse into someone else's life.
Bring Back Sincerity is the coolest. He really should get paid for writing this stuff. His interview with G-d is one I won't forget very fast.
Master Green is a believer. Best of luck to him in finding the right one at the right time.
I just started reading TreppenwitZ recently and it seems like a great, easy reading blog.
Frum Affair is like no Jewish blog I have ever seen. The blog of a frum woman getting over an extra-marital affair! No juice, just heart. While her situation is more common than we would like to believe, her blog is not common at all.
If you still do not believe that our yiddishkeit is in a very sorry state, A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing is the blog for you. If you think he is the only one “who married, stopped listening to shmussen, started going out in the world, and, somewhere along the line, just fell off and nobody noticed,” you are mistaking.
Are you missing the Hasidic Rebel? The Heretic Hasid would like to take his place. A true non-believer.
OrthoSceptic claims that Orthosceptics do not believe, I respectfully disagree. I think Orthosceptics don't want to believe. They are not looking for proof of the existence of Hashem, they are looking for an easy way out. Their education is not missing proof, it might be missing the the love of Torah, Mitzvos and Avodas Hashem that should have been an essential part of their upbringing.
The Shaigetz is an amusing blog by a believer. Keep in mind that most of the time he is far less serious than he comes across.
“The Epitome Of Perfection In Teenage Naivety.” Will someone tell her that spelling mistakes are not required for authenticity? A very young blog that will hopefully mature into a thoughtful place as it matures.
The blog is too young to be judged, but I think the kneidele will turn out to be a believer, if she stays around long enough.

The A List
What started as a small discussion forum for a group of geeks, is now Hashkfah.com. One of the latest members is Ruthie Pearlman! I guess Hashkafah is now mainstream, or is it?
OnlySimchas is probably still the most popular site among sem girls and bored cubicle dwellers. From other peoples engagement pictures to finding out your friend got married.
Jrants is by far the best Jewish blog aggregator out there.

There will be no referrer tracking on my part on this blog and no counter. I will not know how many people read, and I won't care. I'll write when I have the time and inspiration and let my archives (JQR promised they'll be up soon,) do theirs during the ‘inspiration-less times.’

Link Day
Today is link day. I know I have not posted in a long time, I'll post another real post a soon as I have something worthwhile to say.
This is definitely the quote of the day: “All guys think about are girls and all girls think about is marriage.” ---Torn
It took the Rebbele many meetings, brainstorming, excuses, accusations, blaming the system, and you name it to reach the conclusion that: Every person is responsible for their own destiny.
Until I take Protocols out of my LinkPad, here's the site that will replace it: Gayil is still new, but she's good. I hope you guys will support her so that she doesn't disappear on us like some other Frum Bloggers.
Does anyone know when Meredith is changing her blog again? Meredith, if you're reading, should I even bother adding the link?
Another blog to keep an eye on: Climbing the Glass Wall.
Just one more link: Veggie Heaven.

Michael sent me an email asking me to post a link, sorry Mike, not up to par yet.
A few days later I get an an email from someone else who wants to make a cross between FrumTeens and JewishHigh. I will not be a part of that but I do envy his Gmail address.
Maidel didn't post anything interesting recently because she does not want to put her family at risk. It's a pleasure reading her nine layers, with lines like "-- Birth date: Mid-Elul I’m not telling what year."
Hashkafah is back up!
Is it me or are the Rebbele's posts too long?
Do I WANT to get involved in a Jewish Music discussion? I think I'll leave it to Mindy.
Mordy really needs to get some sort of blog tool so that people know what's new.
There are lots of new Jewish blogs out there. Aishel's place is a great place to start. Protocols' blogroll is not worth much anymore.

Seems the Mighty Mordy who has brought us mightymordy.com, hudsonplutz.com and anopenletter.org has a new website!
Via BrainDead comes this great game. My top score was 493.3. My top score for a 'ground-penguin' was 485.5.
Katla Kanya, Aidel Maidel and Natan still have my old URL, that's probably why my daily average is staying so low.

I'm Back For Now
In the little while I was gone, I had many things to write about, but by now they’re all forgotten.
A lot has been going on here in the past few weeks.
The Rabbi in Montreal had another post.
Katla Kanya is running a 18 Million Dollar scam.
Protocols talks about nothing but The Passion.
Miriam is in the spirit of Purim.
Aidel Maidel finally got hooked on Mama Rochel.
Hemishtown CLAIMS she’s gone. I’m sure she’ll be back one day.
Natan has nothing but a quote on his site.
She’s got some Purim Pix up.
The one place with no news is Hashkafah. A surprisingly large percaentage of Hashkafainiks say they have been to websites that are inappropriate in their own opinion.
And that's your J-Blog round-up for today. Back to normal post coming soon! You may notice that comments are now disabled. If you have something to say that's not important enough to send by email, keep it to yourself. If you do send it by email, I might add it to the comments for others to read.

Kudos to the people over at Jewish Street for the new chatroom system.
UPDATE: I found this rant from a disgruntled former employee of E-Shop, owners of JewishStreet and Virtual Jerusalem. If you only believe 50% of what he writes, you should probably still boycott any E-Shop site.

Dor Yeshorim
All that's missing from this write-up on Dor Yeshorim is a mention of the price!
via Avishy
EDIT: 2/19/04 07:45
My point was simply that it's very expensive. "So far we have tested close to 170,000 people" X $150. I'll let you do the math. Maybe their R&D really does cost millions, but it still seems wrong.
They are definitely more of a business than an organization.

I think that if you're not in a rush to have the tests done, it costs somewhere around $135 (In baltimore). If you need to get a rush test, it costs closer to $200.

Soundscape, I don't think you'd rather have kids with Tay-Sachs.... you should never be put in that situation, but that rabbi had FOUR kids die from it...that's so terrible, I can't bare to think about it. True, it's expensive, but it's worth saving lives.
It's good they've implemented doing the tests in high schools...that way waiting 3-months is not a big deal...what's the rush? If a person only takes the test when they're seriously dating...listen, you waited, you gotta pay extra for the rush-job.

I don't think I'd make a judgment either way until I knew the price of genetics testing in labs. R&D is also very expensive, and he alluded to patenting issues which may have a bearing upon the price. Don't forget that Dor Yeshorim provides the additional service of anonymity, which standard genetics testing does not afford.
Obviously, my test was done when things were cheaper, but then again I wasn't tested for so many things that they test for today.
I think that even if it is profitable, it's still a very noble business venture.

keep in mind..if you do genetic testing yourself, it's not enough if you end up being a carrier of a disease.... then your partner has to do the testing, too...
Someone I know did dor yeshorim and then regular testing when she was pregnant and found out that she was a carrier of something. She got sooo nervous...They called dor yeshorim and it turned out that she & her husband had been tested for that same disease gene through them, so she didn't have to worry...they were compatible!

Here in Australia the tests are done thru doctors. Not only are the tests subsidised, but also get your results within a few days! Not results saying "yes, you can marry him" but results saying whether u have that "thing" (I dont call it a disease, because it only becomes a disease if both parents have it, only then is there a chance for the child to have it).
So, if you know that you are not a carrier, (and they test for about 4 different things), then you don't even have to worry about what your partner might be a carrier of, because there is no chance that it will affect your children.
This Eckstein could easily give you the results, but of course he wont because he wants BOTH sides to get tested, and every kid in the family too. (another thing you probably dont know is, that if both parents are negative, then the kids are too).
The kehilla in Antwerp also organised their own tests, due to their disgust with eckstein.
Rise and Rebel my children!

To clarify to everyone: Dor Yeshorim tests for nine diseases at a rock bottom price of $150.00. The same test done by any other labs costs over $900.00. While some misinformed people claim that the reason ekstein does not give out information is because he wants to make more money by testing everyone, that is untrue. The true reason is to protect the confidentiality of the carriers. If people knew of their carrier status they would have to disclose it to their prospective dates. While some are educated enough to know that a carrier is not ill many would reject such matches

An Open Letter
I have nothing to add to this letter. Only that I could have, and really should have written the same type of thing a very long time ago. I agree with everything he says and I pledge to do my best to publicize the letter.
Via Mighty Mordy's email list.
Sure, the letter comes from someone with an agenda. Sure, there are many other examples where the children are really at fault. Sure, there's no justification for sleeping around. All these things don't change the validity of the letter. The fact remains: our chinuch system needs some serious work. Our chinuch system, in my opinion, is the root of the trouble. But I did enough ranting about that. I'm off to make copies of the letter.
Here is the letter in its entirety. And here are the responses the writer received.

I think we are mixing several issues here. From a parent, to any parent out there:
1.a) The heimishe olam needs to learn to accept the fact that not every one of our children is the same, or suited to the life we are promoting.
b) We have to be ready and able to provide viable, healthy, Torah-true alternatives to those who cannot learn Torah lishmah 18 hours a day.
2. a) Our children's shidduchim cannot be sacrificed on the altar of our prestige.
b) For those who have matured and are ready for marriage, our priority should be to marry off our kids.
3. We need to stop losing our kid's trust. If our kids cannot rely on us to find them suitable marriage partners, and s'passt nisht to have them meet any other way, what are they left with?

Carpe Noctum
Season’s Greetings? As I get older, it’s harder to feel the spirit of Chanuka....
...Yet all too often we celebrate without really reflecting upon “nes gadol haya sham,” it was a miracle that the Jewish people are here to stay. We get so caught up with latkas, dreidels, menorahs, and Hanuka bushes (r”l), that we forget that it’s Torah that was saved. Not a culture, not simply a way of life, but a religion with a connection to the Borei Olam. The very things that the Jews eschewed we are now embracing- love of sensual pleasures. The Greeks were master sensualists. They loved the beauty of the human body. They loved food, sex, music, and else anything that felt good. Our Chanuka parties have good food, good company, and are a rollicking good time. It feels good. But it’s Togetherness! you shout. It’s Family time! Love and Brotherhood and Comraderie. But will someone say a Dvar Torah? Perhaps an obligatory short one. How about some Zmiros, some singing of Chanuka songs? Feh. Pass s’more of those latkas, Zaidy.
The Ma'alos had an article in the same vain. But hey, that's what that magazine is all about...
Have a happy Chanukkah... Whatever it means to you...
EDIT: It was in Der Blick, not Ma'alos. My apologies.

The writing is good. On the big question "Should people keep personal websites?" S/He answers,
Before you bring this issue up on hashkafah.com, consider this:
Anyone can look at a public site like OnlySimchas.com and come away envious. I need not go into details to emphasize my point. Some people will be happy for you no matter what. Some people will be jealous no matter what. Should you hole yourself away from the world at large in order to avoid being the recipient of an evil eye?
No.
Just proceed with caution.
